Spain is a linguistically diverse country where multiple languages are spoken alongside the national language, Spanish (Castilian). Castilian Spanish, the official language used nationwide, is the first language for about 74% of the population. However, the country's rich cultural heritage is also reflected in its several regional languages. Catalan, spoken by approximately 17.5% of Spaniards, is prevalent in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and parts of Valencia. Galician, used by around 6.2% of the population, is primarily spoken in Galicia. Basque, although used by a smaller proportion (1.3%), is distinctive for its uniqueness, being a language isolate and spoken in the Basque Country and parts of Navarra. These languages serve not only as a communication tool but as a vital part of regional identity and cultural expression.
